Teens pay more for car insurance since statistics
show they are much more likely to get into an accident
-- yet there are ways to significantly reduce the premiums
they must pay. |

Reducing the Cost of Teenage Car Insurance |
Here are some steps you can take, to cut the cost
of premiums for a teen.
- Take a driver's training course. This is usually
offered free at public schools. Many insurers offer
a discount for drivers who have successfully completed
such a course and who have learned defensive driving
skills.
- If possible include the teen's policy with that
of the family or another person -- this can significantly
reduce premiums.
- Encourage the teen to buy a sensible car that will
cost less to insure. Avoid fast cars or muscle cars.
- Make sure that the teen drives carefully and conscientiously
-- just one ticket or accident will increase insurance
premiums dramatically.
- Monitor a teen's driving habits. Studies have shown,
for example, that teens are much more likely to get
into an accident when a number of teens are riding
in the same car.
- Teach your teen to avoid distractions. For example,
prohibit them from talking on a cell phone while driving.
While it may not be illegal in your state (although
it is in many states), using a cell phone while driving
often leads to accidents.

Reducing the Cost of Adult Car Insurance |
Most of the advice that applies to teens also applies
to adults. For example, if you have never taken a defensive
driving course, you may find that completing one will
reduce your premiums. Careful driving and avoiding tickets
will also keep your premiums low. And using a cell phone
while driving is just as much a hazard for adults as
it is for teens. |
